What is AWS Class E385-16 Coated Electrodes?

AWS Class E385-16 Coated Electrodes are designed for welding high-alloy stainless steels containing 20–22% Cr, 24–26% Ni, 4.5–6% Mo, and low carbon to resist intergranular corrosion. They provide excellent resistance to pitting, crevice, and chloride-induced corrosion. Mechanically, weld deposits offer tensile strength around 550–620 MPa, yield strength of 350 MPa, and elongation of 30–35%, ensuring toughness and ductility. With outstanding arc stability, low spatter, and easy slag removal, these electrodes deliver strong, crack-resistant welds suitable for critical applications in aggressive environments.

AWS Class E385-16 Coated Electrodes Uses

AWS Class E385-16 Coated Electrodes are widely used for welding stainless steels of similar composition, particularly alloys with high molybdenum and nickel content that resist severe corrosion. They are ideal for fabricating and repairing equipment in chemical processing plants, desalination units, paper and pulp industries, and marine environments where pitting and crevice corrosion are common. These electrodes are also applied in pharmaceutical and food processing industries where cleanliness and durability are essential. Their excellent mechanical properties and corrosion resistance make them suitable for joining tanks, pipes, heat exchangers, and pressure vessels operating under harsh and corrosive service conditions.
